Wako Works of Art is pleased to announce the solo exhibition At the
edges of the cultivated land
by the Dutch artist Henk Visch, which
opens Friday, May 25, 2018, and runs through July 14, 2018. This will be Visch’s seventh solo show with the gallery.

“At the edges of the cultivated land” includes 13 sculptures and 20
drawings. For sculptural works he incorporates bronze, aluminum, iron, copper, wood, glass, polyester, fabric, and even ready-made goods such as accessories and miniature models. With such an eclectic choice of materials, Visch creates unique and somewhat uncanny human figures which have smooth, liquid-like contours evolved out of his contemplative, inner psychic journey, and his tactile sense of the outer world.

“I start with the foot,” he says, “in which I picture someone who’s
asleep, and that’s how the form comes into being. While slowly
continuing, I notice it wakes up with a start, or it might behave like
a teenager who doesn’t want to get out of bed” (excerpt from the
exhibition catalogue "drawings : Hope everything is good with you").

This metaphoric account suggests the impossibility of verbalizing his
creative process as well as the unfathomed depth of the artist’s inner
world. The artist immerses himself in this vast imaginative inner
space, “the ever-present abyss”—according to the correspondence
between Visch and his friend, the artist Yoshitomo Nara—to meet the
peculiar single esthetic point that enables him to begin work. Such a unique method Visch applies centers his works at the bounderies between existence and nonexistence, to awaken viewer’s awareness of their own perception of being.

A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, May 26, 2018,
from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition is held under the auspices of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
