The Belgian artist Luc Tuymans was born in 1958 in Morstel, near Antwerp. He is widely recognized for his contribution in revival painting in 1990s. The works are renouned for the sparsely colored, figurative works which speak in a quiet, restrained, and at times unsettling voice and pre-existing imagery including video stills and as subject motif, often explored diverse and sensitive topics including the Holocaust and 9.11, the colonial history of his native Belgium. His works are exhibited and are in collection around the world including representation at 49th Venice Biennale (Belgium Pavilion, 2001) and the retrospective at Tate Modern, London in 2004. Tuymans was recently commissioned a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and it is on a permanent display. He lives and works in Antwerp.
